Getting a jump on New York, Stockholm hosted its own Spring/Summer 2014 Mercedes-Benz fashion shows this week. Sweden being the land of the midnight sun, the parties went on well into the wee hours. First up was an exhibition of portraits of Chloë Sevigny photographed by BLK DNM creative director Johan Lindeberg for the launch of Absolut's new vodka, Elyx. Large-scale black-and-white images dominated a dark room inside the city's Music and Theater Museum, filled to the brim with partygoers Catherine Baba , Lynn Yaeger , and Ann-Sofie Back. "I wanted to support and portray women with a strong integrity," Lindeberg told Style.com, "and Chloë was my natural first choice."

Later that evening, in town for his Back to Sweden art show at Gallery Steinsland Berliner, André Saraiva hosted Alicia Vikander, Waris Ahluwalia , and Sarah Lerfel at a pop-up Le Baron, and Tommy Saleh's fashion week staple "New York, New York" opened its doors for one night only at Nosh and Chow town house. Finishing things off was an intimate dinner hosted by Fashion Networks founder Christian Remröd for South African art dealer Paul McCabe, held at members' club Nobile. True to their online credentials, Rumi Neely, Bryanboy's Bryan Grey Yambao , and Chic Muse's Denni Elias kept themselves busy Instagramming, while Jen Brill and Efva Attling giggled and made faces for the camera phones.

Applause

"Can you believe we're in Brooklyn!" exclaimed Lady Gaga on the red carpet outside the Barclays Center at last night's 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Brooklyn was indeed in the house. The world's top musical acts turned up at the show in more pared-down ensembles than at VMAs past, against a backdrop of brownstones and bars. Ms. Gaga was in a New York state of mind, or St. Marks Place, at least, with a custom black Prabal Gurung gown, accessorized by long black hair and a single nose ring. Miley Cyrus brought a bit of bling to her vintage Dolce & Gabbana black crop top and leggings with encrusted rhinestones and Giuseppe Zanotti platforms. Models Coco Rocha and Erin Wasson had fans wondering if fashion week came early, strolling into the arena in all black looks—Rocha in a punked-out leather jacket to match her new pixie cut, and Wasson in a black turban and long-sleeve mesh dress that left little to the imagination.

Some attendees brought Hollywood glam to the East Coast. Rita Ora was a showstopper in a baby blue long-sleeved sequin Alexandre Vauthier gown with feathered train, while Ciara conjured up over-the-top awards show glam in cutout Givenchy couture. Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez looked Academy Awards bound. Swift was serious and statuesque in a skintight navy Hervé Leger by Max Azria, her hair side-parted with siren-esque waves. Gomez chose an Atelier Versace long-sleeve navy gown with a peekaboo sequin bustier.

Once the show started, though, demure went out the window. Gaga performed her new single "Applause" in a seashell bra and thong bottom, while Miley Cyrus sang "Blurred Lines" alongside Robin Thicke , twerking the room in nude underwear. In a skinny mint green suit, Macklemore picked up a silver Moonman early on in the awards for Best Hip-Hop Video for "Can't Hold Us." Introduced by Jared Leto, Kanye West performed a much bleeped-out "Black Skinhead," and Pharrell Williams, who in true Brooklyn style rode his bike to the show, presented Best Female Video along with Nile Rodger and Daft Punk to Taylor Swift for "I Knew You Were Trouble."

The biggest honor of the night, however, went to Justin Timberlake, who picked up the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Timberlake performed a medley of hits and teamed up with former 'N Sync bandmates for a much buzzed-about reunion.

House Proud

Ten years is a long time for a New York City hot spot to remain on the radar, and Soho House has never needed too much arm-twisting to throw a bash. So when the members-only club's Meatpacking District location hit the big 1-0, a party was a foregone conclusion. So was a starry guest list, culled from the ranks of the member rolls. Jennifer Connelly , Paul Bettany , Gina Gershon , John Legend , and Alan Cumming all turned out. Even Richard Chai and Thakoon both snuck away from pre-fashion-week preparations to swing by for a cocktail before promptly returning to their studios to get back to work.

What's the enduring appeal? "It really is one of the last places in New York where you can come out and enjoy some privacy," said J.Crew's Jenna Lyons , who has known her share of unwanted attention. That's because house rules prevent guests from using their cell phones, and picture taking is strictly forbidden. But when Mumford & Sons came onstage to perform, there was no stopping guests from Instagramming, tweeting, and recording the performance. And there was a lot to see: Frontman Marcus Mumford 's wife, Carey Mulligan, was perched offstage behind a tower of speakers, and after two unsuspecting partygoers were dragged onstage to sing karaoke, Legend joined the band for a rendition of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." Despite the pictures, guests still felt comfortable enough to enjoy themselves. At one point, Lyons hopped—dress and all—into the pool to get an unobstructed view of the show atop an inflatable swan.

Runway to Red Carpet: Black and White, but Not a Bit of Boring

It seems the stars picked up on Resort '14's black-and-white cues on the red carpet this week. On Wednesday afternoon, Taylor Swift mixed and matched Elie Saab separates at a press event in L.A. She paired a white blouse with a sheer lace panel on the front from Fall '13 with black pleated shorts from the Resort '13 collection. On the opposite coast, funny girl Tina Fey exited Late Show With David Letterman wearing a black-and-white body-con Reed Krakoff dress with a printed bodice that was perforated at the shoulders.

Tuesday night featured an appearance from supermodel and new mom Lara Stone, who helped hubby David Walliams celebrate his birthday in London while wearing a gray camo minidress from Christopher Kane's Fall '13 runway. That same night, Lily Collins continued to shine on the red carpet at the Berlin premiere of her film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, in a black Paper London crop top and floor-length Halston Heritage skirt, accented with a chunky gold-chain necklace and gold cuff. Lady Gaga had a very busy Monday, stepping out in four different outfits while traveling to and from several TV and radio appearances throughout the day to promote her new single, "Applause." To start the day, Mother Monster arrived at ABC's studio in New York for Good Morning America looking decidedly smart in a conservative (for Gaga, at least) black Balenciaga Resort '14 frock. Her newly sophisticated style is a welcome change from the queen of sartorial shock. But fans of her more eccentric looks need not fret—she later changed into a white sculpted paper Mathieu Mirano ensemble for her on-screen appearance.

Fight Club

The Weinstein Company threw a party at the Royalton Hotel last night for its latest film, The Grandmaster. Hong Kong's legendary Kar Wai Wong directed the flick, a star-crossed love story of kung fu rivals played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Zhang Ziyi . "I think Tony is the most talented actor in China," Ziyi said. But that was an accolade everyone else seemed to be paying her. Opening Ceremony's Humberto Leon said, "I love to see a girl fight. Zhang had some killer moves tonight."

Six blocks south, on the Refinery Hotel rooftop, the Cinema Society and Downtown Calvin Klein hosted a bash for a different kind of love story, Ain't Them Bodies Saints, the new movie starring Rooney Mara . Richard Gere , Robin Wright , Courtney Love , and Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa all took in the screening. Mara plays a Southern outlaw who shoots a man, lets her husband take the fall, and, over the coming years of his incarceration, struggles with her guilt. So what kind of real-life regrets does Mara have? Director David Lowery said this particular role was pitched only to Mara, but are there other roles she wishes she had taken, or hadn't? The actress told Style.com, "Of course, I have a lot of regrets. But I'm not going to tell you what they are. I'd rather keep the wool over your eyes."

Party Politics

"This isn't your typical fashion party," joked a group of editors at last night's Young New York fund-raiser for Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer . The punch line, of course, is that the Maritime Hotel event wasn't technically a fashion party at all, but rather an occasion for young city dwellers to rally support for Stringer—who just happens to have a lot of backing in the fashion and arts community.

"This is very hard. Political conversations are difficult," commented the Man Repeller's Leandra Medine from the moss-covered balcony of the hotel, "but Stringer just seems like the better candidate, considering the women of New York City, the middle class—and the obvious reasons." (Stringer's opponent is Eliot "Client Number 9" Spitzer.) The street-style mainstay spent the night mingling with a host of industry insiders, including Pamela Love , Prabal Gurung , Annabelle Dexter-Jones , Claire Distenfeld, and Chrissie Miller .

"Scott's in support of a lot of small businesses, and I'm definitely a small-business owner," explained The Smile's Carlos Quirarte from the bar, where Terry Richardson had set up shop. "He seems to care about trying to make things easier for us."

Stringer later took to the stage to address the crowd personally, vowing to fight for the middle class (and preserve the garment district), but not before receiving a rousing and quite humorous endorsement from Lena Dunham . "In some elections, we have a real choice between candidates. Maybe they're distinguished by policies or by position papers. But let's be clear: That's not the case in this election," stated Dunham. "This is not a close call. We need a candidate with a record of respecting women and the issues that matter to them. We need a candidate who is going to care about the needs of the next generation of New Yorkers—we can't have our generation's Patti Smith moving to Tampa. In Scott Stringer, we have such a candidate."
